YEREVAN. – The arrest and sentence of the Armenian activist Vahagn Chakhalyan carries political character, opposition Heritage parliament group secretary Zaruhi Postanjyan told the journalists on Friday.

“Chakhalyan introduced problems of the Armenians in Javakhk, Georgia, including the language and other issues of national minorities. However, we do not believe that Armenians are minority in Georgia,” Postanjyan said.

As for the upcoming parliamentary elections in Georgia, which are scheduled for Oct. 1, she said that once they are over, various structures will discuss their level of meeting the international criteria. 

She also was in the Armenian populated region and got introduced to the problems there. The MP called the Armenian authorities to be more active in lobbying release of Chakhalyan, and in protecting rights of the Armenian population in Georgia.
