The South Caucasus Railway (SCR) Company issued a statement with respect to the deadly accident that occurred in Armenia on Tuesday.

“A freight train collided with an OPEL on the Arteni-Qarakert distance on October 30 at about 13:00. Taking the emergency brake, the train ran into the car dropping it to 6-7 meters. As a result of the emergency, one person died and four were injured.

The accident occurred due to carelessness of the driver who, while crossing the tracks, did not heed the warning signs of a possible approach of a train.

The Railway reminds drivers that protected crossings should be crossed only with the permission of the duty, and unprotected ones with full confidence in the safety and help trying to rush ahead the train can lead to serious consequences. Often drivers ignore the claims of the duty and try to avoid the gate crossing the road in front of full-speed-up rolling stock even in protected crossings.

For its part, SCR takes all necessary measure to ensure traffic safety; it holds a program of repair of railway crossings, regularly carried out to identify shortcomings on crossings, and conducts technical studies for the duties.

Rail transport, just like automobiles, cannot stop at once; in an emergency stopping, passenger trains pass a distance of at least 800 meters. Be careful and remember that by your wrongful actions you endanger not only yourselves, but also the lives and health of passengers!”, the South Caucasus Railway Company’s statement reads.
