Azerbaijani-Americans for Democracy (AZAD) organization has sent a letter to the government of Mexico City supporting the decision to remove monument to Heydar Aliyev.

In a letter, head of the organization Elmar Chakhtakhtinski said he was “dismayed” by Azerbaijani government’s response to the municipality’s recommendation to remove the monument.

The letter calls these threats “bullying tactics” and expresses hope that the Mexican side will not allow the Azerbaijani regime to dictate the residents of Mexico City what they can do in their own parks.

In a letter published on Azeri report, Heydar Aliyev is called “an enemy of democracy” and responsible for “violations of human rights and freedoms of the Azerbaijani people.” Those who value freedom will be pleased if the monument is removed, the letter says.

As reported earlier, Mexico City’s municipality set up a commission to consider the issue of removing a monument to Heydar Aliyev which aroused indignation of capital’s residents.

Commission recommended the government to transfer the monument to another place. In response Azerbaijan warned to stop investments in Mexico.
