TBILISI. – Pursuant to the amnesty law which the Georgian parliament recently passed, Armenian political prisoners Armen Gevorgyan and Ruben Shekoyan were released from prison on Sunday. 

Both are Adjara Armenian community activists, and they were arrested in October 2010 and sentenced to eleven years, but without any sound evidence against them.  

The former political prisoners went to Holy Etchmiadzin Armenian Church in capital city Tbilisi, where they were welcomed by Bishop Vazgen Mirzakhanian, Primate of the Georgian Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, the diocese’s press service informed Armenian News-NEWS.am. Bishop Mirzakhanian highly appreciated the fair and humane manifestations of Georgia’s new authorities and congratulated Gevorgyan and Shekoyan on their release.

To note, another Armenian political prisoner, namely, Vahagn Chakhalyan, likewise is expected to be set free soon in Georgia.
