YEREVAN. – Anyone would have been elected the President of Armenia except for opposition Heritage Party Chairman, former FM Raffi Hovannisian—who was declared runner-up to the winner, incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan, as a result of the presidential election that was conducted on February 18, but who claims to be the real winner in the vote. Gurgen Yeghiazaryan, a member of the opposition wing of the Social-Democratic Hnchakyan Party (SDHP), noted this during a press conference on Monday.

Yeghiazaryan stated that he had expressed his views, with respect to Hovannisian’s actions, even before the presidential vote and said that Hovannisian’s “road” will lead to nowhere.

Also, it is unacceptable for the SDHP representative that Hovannisian defends Sargsyan saying that the latter is a Karabakh (Artsakh) war hero.

“If he is a hero, why are you competing against a hero of Artsakh?” Yeghiazaryan asked Heritage’s leader.

In his view, Sargsyan proposed Hovannisian to become a “fake opposition.”

“They propose him something and know that this can be proposed to him. Subsequently, [Sargsyan] can [even] make [Hovannisian] President,” Gurgen Yeghiazaryan added.

He also noted that even though all this is temporary, it causes disarray among the political opposition.

“See who were by his [that is, Hovannisian’s] side but left realizing that this man has no program. This road does not lead to the temple; it leads to a worse place. This plan is the next shame,” Gurgen Yeghiazaryan concluded.
