Oxford Internet Institute presented a map illustrating the most visited website in each country.

“Information Geographies” project presented a map titled “Age of Internet Empires” which is based on the data available on Alexa.

The data are visualised as a choropleth map, where the colour indicates each country’s most visited website.

The map shows that Google and Facebook remain the most popular resources, with Google covering the map of most European states, North America, Brazil, India and other countries. Facebook is the most visited website in most of the Middle East and North Africa, as well as much of the Spanish-speaking Americas. It is also the most visited website in Armenia.

At the same time Baidu appeared to be the most visited website in China, while Yahoo! – in Japan and Taiwan. The Al-Watan Voice newspaper is the most visited website in the Palestinian Territories, the e-mail service Mail.ru is the most visited in Kazakhstan, the social network VK  the most visited in Belarus, and the search engine Yandex the most visited in Russia.
