The Turkish MFA released a statement concerning the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) ruling in favor of anti-Armenian Turkish politician Dogu Perincek’s lawsuit that was filed against Switzerland.

The statement noted that, “Turkey became an intervening party in the case, which closely concerns our country in every aspect, and submitted observations to the ECtHR in this context,” reports Haberand website of Turkey.

The statement also underscored that the ECtHR judgment made a distinction between the events in 1915 and the Holocaust.

“This judgment given by the highest judicial authority on human rights in Europe also provides the necessary response to the legislative initiatives on ‘denial’ especially in Europe,” the Turkish MFA statement reads, in particular.

To note, the ECtHR ruled in favor of Dogu Perincek’s lawsuit on the grounds of freedom of speech. In 2008, a Swiss court had convicted Perincek for denying the Armenian Genocide. Dogu Perincek is Chairman of the socialist Workers’ Party of Turkey. In addition, he heads the Talat Pasha organization, which actively fights against the Armenian Genocide’s recognition in Europe.
