Azerbaijan expresses an official protest against Armenia’s entrance into the Customs Union (CU).

Ali Hasanov, Head of Department of Public and Political Issues of Presidential Administration of Azerbaijan, told the aforesaid to Trend news agency of Azerbaijan

“Since Armenia has occupied Azerbaijan’s Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts, its entrance into any union or association is contrary to the principles of international law,” Hasanov stated.

Azerbaijan is not a Russian-led Customs Union member, and it is not making any such plans for a foreseeable future.  

Following the talks that were held on September 3 in Moscow between Armenian and Russian Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Vladimir Putin, Sargsyan had announced that Armenia plans to join the Customs Union and subsequently engage in the formation of the Eurasian Economic Union. And the road map for Armenia’s accession to the Customs Union was recently adopted. Aside from Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan likewise are members in the Customs Union.
