Armenia’s accession to the Customs Union (CU) in no way implies an end to European integration.

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan told the aforesaid to Lidovе Noviny newspaper of the Czech Republic, during his state visit to this country.

“We have been productively cooperating in many domains for a long time, and we intend to continue our relations.

“We give great importance to cooperation with the European Union. With the joint statement adopted at the Vilnius Summit [of the EU Eastern Partnership], we reaffirmed Armenia’s readiness to develop and strengthen cooperation,” Sargsyan noted.

In his words, Armenia’s decision to join the Customs Union does not mean renunciation from the agenda of Armenia-EU relations.

“The expanding of our discourse and cooperation with the EU remains a priority on the agenda of our relations,” the President noted.

To the query as to whether Armenia wants to become an EU member in the future, Sargsyan responded: “Such a question was not on our agenda, and it is not today, too.”

As for the reporter’s question as to what Armenia expects from EU Eastern Partnership, the President stated:

“For us the Eastern Partnership is a mechanism for interaction with our European partners, it is the achieving of common goals and the resolving of shared problems.”
