As expected, the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) won Sunday’s local government elections in Turkey.

As a result of the 97 percent of the opened ballot boxes, the leader in the elections is AKP with 44.9 percent, Sozcu daily of Turkey reported. 

The party in power is followed by the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) with 27.3 percent, the opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) with 18.4 percent, and the pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) with 4.8 percent of the votes cast.

But there is a contention in several cities.
