German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian president Vladimir Putin discussed various aspects of the situation in Ukraine during a phone conversation on Monday.

“The President said it was important for Ukraine to carry out constitutional reform aimed at protecting the lawful interests of people in all Ukrainian regions,” Kremlin said in a statement.

The two leaders agreed to continue close bilateral contacts at various levels on all of these issues.
