New research published in medical journal, the Lancet, has found that more than 5.5 million babies are born and die each year without a birth or death certificate, The Guardian reported.

A table of 195 countries is also provided, ranking the safest and least safe countries to be born in, the countries in which babies are least likely to get a birth certificate, and the high-income countries with the slowest progress on neonatal mortality.

Sierra Leone is ranked as the least safe country to be born in with a neonatal mortality rate of 49.5 per thousand live births in 2012.

Japan, on the other hand, heads the list of the safest countries to be born in with a neonatal mortality rate of 1.1 per thousand live births.

Armenia heads the list in the percentage of livebirths in 2012 that are registered by the child’s first birthday, and the list in the skilled attendant at birth. And the country is ranked 99th with a neonatal mortality rate of 10.1 per thousand live births in 2012
