YEREVAN. – The potential opening of the Armenian-Turkish boundary is yet another tactical step by Turkey PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Armenian turkologist Artak Shakaryan expressed such a view at a press conference on Monday, and commenting on the Turkish Taraf daily’s news that Turkey plans to open the border in September.

In his words, even if the Armenia-Turkey boundary were to open, it will open solely for the flow of people. Consequently, as per the analyst, the Turkish PM will show to the international community that, “[Official] Ankara has no problems with the Armenian people.”

As for the Armenian authorities’ reaction, in Shakaryan’s words, official Yerevan needs to manifest determination and make clear that such a step is positive, but not enough to develop full market relations between the two countries, since only in this case will it be possible to speak about the sincerity of the intentions of the Turkish leadership.

Following the aforesaid news which Taraf had run, however, the Turkey MFA had formally stated that this news was inaccurate.
