German Chancellor Angela Merkel has arrived in Ukraine to hold meetings with president Petro Poroshenko and Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk amid growing tension in Ukraine's East.

This is Merkel's first visit to Ukraine since Poroshenko has been elected to the post, BBC Russian service reported.

Ahead of her trip to Ukraine, Merkel discussed Ukrainian crisis in a phone conversation with U.S. President Barack Obama.

“They agreed that it is imperative that Russia remove its convoy from Ukrainian territory, accept the conditions previously agreed to with Ukraine and the International Red Cross for any humanitarian convoys in Ukraine,” reads the statement by the White House.
