YEREVAN. – The son of Armenia's Ambassador to Georgia has been sentenced to four years and six months in jail on the charges of drug smuggling.

During this period, Davit Vardanyan will have to receive court-ordered drug addiction treatment.

Ambassador Yuri Vardаnyan, who is also former minister of sport and youth affairs, was not present in the courtroom, while convict's mother refused to comment on the verdict.

Yuri Vardanyan’s eldest son, Davit Vardanyan, 29, was arrested on the Iran-Armenia border last October. Davit Vardanyan was detained while attempting to smuggle drugs at the border.

The verdict will be appealed, his lawyer Vahan Hayrapetyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.
