YEREVAN. – Armenian Minister of Justice Hovhannes Manukyan on Monday received a delegation led by Nils Muižnieks, the Council of Europe (CoE) Commissioner for Human Rights.

Muižnieks asked the minister about the objectives and priorities of the judicial reforms in Armenia. Manukyan responded that the primary task of these reforms in the country is to raise public confidence and the efficiency of the judicial system.

To the query on the extent to which judges in Armenia are penalized for their mistakes, Manukyan responded that this is a very sensitive issue. As per the minister, this matter needs to be resolved by way of primarily internal oversight regulations.

The guests were also briefed on the envisioned amendments in Armenia’s criminal and procedural laws.

In addition, the interlocutors reflected on several reforms aimed at improving the conditions in which Armenia’s prisoners are detained.

At the end of the talk, Hovhannes Manukyan presented to Nils Muižnieks a hand-made souvenir prepared by an inmate, and expressed a conviction that justice will ultimately become the best regulator of social relations.
