The United States does not seek confrontation with Russia, but cannot and will not compromise on the principles on which security in Europe and North America rest, State Department representative said commenting on Putin's statement.

Earlier Russian president voiced criticism against the United States and accused Washington of funding fighters in Syria.

During the briefing on Friday, Jen Psaki reiterated Washington's commitment to upholding Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“We’ve consistently pointed out from here that the United States and Russia have been able to work together on a range of issues, whether that’s destroying nuclear stockpiles to cooperating to remove and destroy Syria’s chemical weapons,” she said.

“So our focus is on continuing to engage with Russia on areas of mutual concern, and we’re hopeful that we’ll be able to continue to do that, while we still certainly have disagreements on some issues, and we’re going to stand by our principles” .
