YEREVAN. – When a citizen appeals to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), this has nothing to do with the standing of a country.

Prosecutor General of Armenia Gevorg Kostanyan, who is also the Armenian government’s authorized representative at the ECtHR, noted the above-said at Monday’s press conference.

Kostanyan recalled that the European Court had ruled against Armenia solely in 48 petitions that were made against the country.

“In the majority of cases, the fact of the violation [by Armenia] was recognized in connection with the legislation, which did not meet international standards.

“[But] the appeals to the ECtHR against Armenia don’t necessarily mean that human rights are not adequately respected in our country,” Gevorg Kostanyan concluded.
