YEREVAN. – The EU delegation in Armenia held an official ceremony on Thursday for the signature of 15 cooperation projects with a budget of approximately €10 million (photo).

The projects will support civil society and local authorities, as well as government reforms in Armenia.

The fifteen contracts are in various fields of bilateral cooperation – from agriculture and rural development to poverty reduction and sustainable urban development.

In his opening speech, head of EU delegation to Armenia, Ambassador Traian Hristea stressed that Armenia is a key partner of EU.

“The EU remains committed to further engage with Armenia, and to strengthen bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest based on shared values,” he said.

Ambassador recalled that EU is Armenia's first trade partner in term of export and import. In addition EU's investments make 52 percent of the whole investments coming to Armenia.

Over the next two-three years, the projects will promote civil society dialogue, strengthen freedom of expression, rule of law, advance gender equality and combat gender-based sex selective abortions in Armenia. They will also promote the integration of Syrian refugees in the country and assist children without parents.

Some projects will also help minimize social and economic hardship of rural communities in Shirak, develop sustainable tourism, promote ecological bee keeping in Vayots Dzor and improve public services in Jujevan, Baghanis and Voskevan.
