YEREVAN. – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s proposal to set up a commission of historians to discuss the genocide issue is a trap, since this will question the historical fact of the Armenian Genocide.

National Academy of Sciences of Armenia Institute of Orientology Director, turkologist Ruben Safrastyan stated the aforementioned at a press conference on Friday.

As per Safrastyan, Turkey continues this tactic for the past ten years, and this initiative by Turkey aims to, first and foremost, mislead the international community to show that, as if, Turkey is ready to explore and discuss the events that occurred in 1915.

“This is dangerous, since the vision of the modern world is as follows: if the parties do not have an agreement on historical events, this [agreement] must be achieved,” the turkologist stated.

He also noted that the Armenian authorities and the Armenian historians have successfully avoided accepting this proposal.

“Why? Because the 1915 Armenian Genocide is a historical fact, and setting up a commission of historians is just a distortion of history,” Ruben Safrastyan stressed.
