YEREVAN. – Armenia should stand out against Azerbaijan with a liberal economy.

The secretary of the Opposition Orinats Yerkir (Rule of Law) Party National Assembly (RLP NA) Faction, Mher Shahgeldyan, noted the aforesaid at Friday’s NA briefings. He stated this while commenting on the Armenian State Commission for the Protection of Economic Competition report being debated at parliament.

At the same time, however, the RLP MP added that Armenia’s economy is sucked up by the monopolies, which are concerned by solely their own profits, and not the economic competitiveness of the country.

“Azerbaijan has oil, Georgia, access to the sea; that is, the starting conditions of their economy are much better. [And] what can Armenia do in response? [It] can create a competitive economy; but it’s the exact opposite, to put it mildly, here at us,” Shahgeldyan stated and added: “If we speak directly, Armenia is ruled by the monopolies which stranglehold sound economic initiatives [in the country].”
