YEREVAN. - Armenia and Mexico have big potential for close cooperation in the political, economic, scientific and cultural spheres, Armenian Parliament Speaker Galust Sahakyan said at the meeting with Gabriela Cuevas Barron, the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Senate of Mexico.

According to the Armenian Parliament press service, Galust Sahakyan expressed his satisfaction with the development of the cultural ties between Armenia and Mexico. He underscored the importance of the activation of the political dialogue between the two countries, stressing the readiness of the Armenian side to establish inter-parliamentary relations. Sahakyan stated that an Armenia-Mexico Friendship Group has been set up in the Armenian parliament.

According to Galust Sahakyan, Armenia also attaches importance to the cooperation in the international arena.

The Armenian Parliament Speaker also touched on the resolutions adopted by the Upper and Lower Chambers of the parliament of Mexico in 2011. The aforementioned resolutions, related to the Karabakh conflict and the negotiation process aimed at the conflict settlement, contradicted the international community’s position on the matter. Galust Sahakyan expressed his concern over the adoption of such resolutions in Mexico, a country where the right of the peoples’ self-determination is considered as a constitutional priority.

Gabriela Cuevas Barron noted that it’s time to expand and deepen the relations between the two countries, since the Mexican and Armenian peoples have much in common in terms of history. In the context of the development of relations, she mentioned the importance of the opening of the Embassy of Armenia to Mexico.

Barron expressed hope that the memorandum signed in the Parliament will serve as a new beginning for the Armenian-Mexican relations, contributing to the deepening of friendship between the two peoples.
