YEREVAN. – Police forces have been brought to France Square in Downtown Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia, because “they wanted to come.” The Deputy Chief of Police of Armenia, Levon Yeranosyan, told the Armenian News-NEWS.am reporter at the scene. He stated this in response to the query as to why there is a police buildup at the square.

“These people also to want to be here; well, they’re people[, too],” said Yeranosyan.

The Chief of Police of Yerevan, Ashot Karapetyan, is also at France Square. He told Armenian News-NEWS.am that police forces have been brought to properly ensure public order.

“Yesterday [i.e. Friday] we witnessed certain actions,” said Karapetyan. “Hence, police forces have been brought here.”

As reported earlier, the police brought in water cannon to France Square on Saturday at around 4pm. In addition, a large number of law enforcement officers are waiting inside police buses and cars and are patrolling the area.

Numerous people have commenced a sit-in at Baghramyan Avenue since Monday evening. They are demanding the revoking of the decision to raise the price of electricity in the country.

Despite numerous protests, the Public Services Regulatory Commission recently increased the price of electricity in Armenia, and this decision will take effect on August 1. The decision, however, is expected to be followed by an increase in the prices of numerous products and services in the country.
