YEREVAN. – The Police cautioned the participants in the ongoing demonstration at Baghramyan Avenue in Armenia’s capital city of Yerevan—and against the decision to raise the electricity tariffs in the country—not to make noise (PHOTOS).

The Armenian News-NEWS.am reporter informed from the scene that the protesters had turned on music on Monday at around 4am, but had quickly turned it off.

Yerevan Deputy Chief of Police Valeri Osipyan, accompanied by officers of the law, approached the demonstrators and demanded—with a loudspeaker—that they maintain the rules of coexistence, turn off the music, and do not make noise.

Osipyan also noted that the protesters at Baghramyan Avenue are carrying out an unlawful action.

“It’s not too late,” he noted. “You [still] may go to Liberty Square and continue your protest action there.”

On the evening of June 23, numerous people had commenced a sit-in at Baghramyan Avenue, closed it off, and demanded the revoking of the decision to raise the price of electricity in the country. But on Sunday, some of them went to Liberty Square, whereas the majority stayed at Baghramyan Avenue.

Despite numerous protests, the Public Services Regulatory Commission recently increased the price of electricity in Armenia, and this decision will take effect on August 1. But the decision is expected to be followed by an increase in the prices of numerous products and services in the country. President Serzh Sargsyan, however, stated that the government will cover this price hike until an audit is conducted at Electric Networks of Armenia (ENA) Company, which supplies electricity to the country’s residents.
