YEREVAN. – The “No to Plunder” initiative, which fights against the electricity price hike in Armenia, has entered a phase of transformation.

The founding president of the Armenian Institute of International and Security Affairs (AIISA), political analyst Stiopa Safaryan, stated the aforementioned at a press conference on Monday. He added that this became apparent on Sunday at Baghramyan Avenue, in capital city Yerevan.

“The conflicts have increased a lot within the movement (…). Those that went to Liberty Square find that relocating [there] is correct, since they don’t want it to be by way of [forcible] dispersal [by the police],” noted Safaryan. “And those that stayed at Baghramyan Avenue believe that it was right to stay there.”

The analyst stated that the success of the aforementioned initiative was due to the fact that it did not have a leader, and there was no political issue on its agenda.

“The authorities fear that the fight will turn into a political [one], which is not happening; that’s why they don’t use force at present,” said Stiopa Safaryan. “However, it is clear that it’s impossible to keep Baghramyan Avenue closed for [a] long [time].”
