YEREVAN. – Many articles in the draft constitutional reform of Armenia do not comply with European standards.

The first Human Rights Defender of the country, “Against Legal Arbitrariness” NGO Executive Director, and public activist Larisa Alaverdyan noted the above-said at a press conference on Thursday.

“I don’t think that the problems faced by the people [in Armenia] will be solved through constitutional reforms,” stressed Alaverdyan. “Their reasons are political.”

In her words, there is haste in the process of conducting a constitutional reform in Armenia, and this haste should be condemned.

“The Constitution is a document which shall be adopted in a calm condition,” added the first Ombudsman of Armenia. “The Constitution is not just a legal document; it’s [also] a profound psychological document.”

Larisa Alaverdyan also commented on the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission) members’ recent talks—in Armenia’s capital city of Yerevan—with the country’s political forces and NGO representatives.

“Answers of the Venice Commission members were more than balanced,” she noted. “[But] solely one thing is questionable: Is the English text in line with European standards?”
