Azerbaijan can really strike a deal with Russia.

Thomas de Waal, a senior associate at the Washington-based Carnegie Endowment, and who specializes primarily in the South Caucasus region, noted the above-said at a discussion on Friday.

De Waal reflected on the likelihood of deploying Russian peacekeepers in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone, and stressed that this, first and foremost, is yet another big risk for the Azerbaijani regime.

The analyst stated, however, that Azerbaijan’s position may indeed be changing, and recently, we are observing a rapprochement between Baku and Moscow.

He added that if peacekeeping troops are deployed in the Karabakh conflict zone, it is clear that they will not be solely Russian peacekeepers because France and the US also have their “say” here.

Nonetheless, as per Thomas de Waal, the events are developing in a way that Russia will possess the main “playing card” in these peacekeeping operations.
