YEREVAN. – The tension on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan has recently escalated, OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier said in Moscow.

He said there is a need for an increased political attention to the problem, noting that he thinks the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs are planning one more meeting with the Azerbaijani and Armenian presidents.

“This is a time when the international community should draw attention to the need to settle this situation,” he said in response to the question by APA correspondent.

Zannier reminded that the OSCE has a special group monitoring the region, adding that a number of vital steps have been taken.

“We have developed a set of principles to ease the situation, so that both sides could contribute to the resolution of this issue. Use of heavy weaponry is especially worrying. I believe a time has come for political initiatives to resolve this matter,” said Zannier, expressing hope that a meeting between the Azerbaijani and Armenian president will soon take place.
