YEREVAN. – The opposition Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) says it will fight so that the forthcoming constitutional referendum is conducted freely.

Senior officials of the party, which supports the proposed amendments, on Saturday met with the residents of Erebuni District of capital city Yerevan, to present these amendments, informed the PAP press service.

The Erebuni residents were briefed on the fundamentals of these draft amendments.

The PAP senior officials also assured that it is very important to them that the refendum is held freely and fairly, so that there will be no doubt as to the legitimacy of this basic law of the country.

The referendum on Armenia’s draft constitutional amendments is slated for December 6.

Pursuant to the new draft Constitution, the country will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance, and conduct completely proportional parliamentary elections.

The opponents of the proposed constitutional amendments, however, consider them to be primarily the authorities’ attempt to hang on to power.
