YEREVAN. – Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev stated, during his talk with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, that Azerbaijan is ready to become a mediator in settling the Turkish-Russian conflict, Zhamanak daily reported.

“Against the backdrop of this statement coming from Baku, the issue of Armenia becomes more urgent. Armenia is the state which is threatened by the Russian-Turkish conflict.

“The thing is that still unofficial but several symptomatic manifestations of the [current] Russian demeanor pose risks that Moscow may consider Armenia a tool to punish Turkey.

“But if Armenia is capable of an independent role here, certainly the prospects really exist here.

“In case of risk management, this conflict is a favorable circumstance for Armenia.

“[But] it would be a very big mistake for Armenia to appear in the role of the ‘junior [brother]’ of the RF [i.e. the Russian Federation],” Zhamanak wrote.
