YEREVAN. – I see a peril in certain regulations of the current Constitution, and I consider it my duty to voice this peril.

The President of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan, stated the aforementioned during his extensive interview with the representatives of national TV broadcasting companies.

He noted this in response to the query on why he initiated the proposed constitutional amendments, and why at this time.

“In my view, public demand is expressed through political forces,” Sargsyan noted. “And the largest of our political forces (…) had always demanded it [i.e. the constitutional amendments].

“And why now? (…) The world is rapidly changing, and I see a peril in certain regulations of the current Constitution, and I consider it my duty to voice this peril.”

The Armenian President added that he was obligated to speak about these perils.

“I would like so that the accountability will be where the rights are,” Serzh Sargsyan stressed. “Second, the [constitutional] regulations have obstacles also in terms of economic development. And third, (…) we are dealing here with the internal and external independence of the judicial system [of Armenia].”
