YEREVAN. – The staff of the Russian Embassy in Armenia on Wednesday marked Diplomats’ Day.

And Russian Ambassador Ivan Volinkin laid a wreath to the statue of Alexander Griboyedov—a Russian diplomat, playwright, poet, and composer—, in downtown capital city Yerevan.

In the ambassador’s words, the day of the diplomatic staff is significant.

“This holiday shows the importance of the work carried out by diplomats,” Volinkin said. “Today, we traditionally put a wreath to the statue of Alexander Griboyedov. Being in the Russian army during the entire Russo-Persian War [from 1826 to 1828], he was actively engaged in diplomatic activities here [in Armenia]. He participated in virtually all battles, including the liberation of Yerevan, in the territory of Armenia.”

Ivan Volinkin added that Alexander Griboyedov helped over 40 thousand Armenians from Iran to return to their homeland, Armenia.
