YEREVAN. - The so-called “frozen” conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh must be solved. Germany can’t decide it: It should be solved only from within.

German Bundestag deputy Christoph Bergner, who is also member of the Bundestag Committee on Foreign Affairs and of the Parliamentary Friendship Group for Relations with South Caucasus Countries, told the aforementioned to journalists Friday at the Armenian Genocide Memorial Complex in Yerevan.

In his words, the OSCE Minsk Group plays a very important role here. “And this year Germany has a special responsibility as a country chairing the OSCE. We will use these opportunities to contribute to the settlement of the conflict. I think that the present status quo is also an obstacle for the entire region.  Therefore, we hope that a solution will be found which will respect the independence and autonomy of the Karabakh Armenians, as well as the territorial integrity of the country,” Bergner said.

Responding to comment of Armenian News – NEWS.am on that the Azerbaijani armed forces tortured and killed civilians as a result of the recent escalation, this being an apparent violation of the international humanitarian law, the German MP said: “The most problematic thing here is that we have no required monitoring system on the Line of Contact. And one of our demands as an OSCE member-state is to have at least a less intensive monitoring system to openly discuss such situations not only here, but also in Europe, and also to assess the opportunity to achieve a decision regarding the confrontation in order to avoid further escalation.”
