The issue on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide isn’t considered by Spain among the priority ones, President of Protection International, Enrique Eguren, told Armenian News – NEWS.am in the framework of Aurora Dialogues, responding to the query as to why official Madrid doesn’t hurry to acknowledge the Armenian Genocide.

“Spain is far from Armenia and the entire region in terms of geopolitics and culture. Possibly for this reason the issue on the recognition of the Genocide isn’t considered among the priority ones,” Erugen said.

In his words, among other reasons are the insufficient awareness of this topic and aspects of national policy.

“Specifically, the country which has acknowledged the Armenian Genocide enters into a conflict with one of the sides, in this case Turkey, like in case of France,” he said.

Touching on the Spanish cities, which have recognized the Armenian Genocide, Eguren noted: “On the local level the issue on the recognition is sensible, since we see the annual rise of the number of these cities.”
