Khadija Ismayilova is courageous, inspirational woman, she knew very well the consequences of being a reporter in Azerbaijan, human rights lawyer Amal Clooney told BBC.

Azerbaijani government, as a member of the Council of Europe, is putting Khadija Ismayilova behind bars, “and this made me very angry,” said Clooney who represents Ismayilova in court.

Asked why Aliyev is welcomed in Washington and was holding meetings with the administration, Ms. Clooney argued that “diplomatic pressure can work” and reminded of 147 prisoners released by Azerbaijan in March.
