Since beginning of 2016 there have been 40 journalists killed worldwide,  reports Rosbalt based on the information of Press Emblem Campaign (PEC) , a non-governmental organization that publishes materials on violations of freedom of speech and rights of journalists. Iraq, Libya, Somalia , Syria, and Yemen are among the most dangerous countries for journalists, since there are taking place either civil wars or struggles against terrorist organizations.

According to the PEC, in 2015, 135 journalists have been killed worldwide. The organization also stated a concern that due to the acts of terrorism and the fight against terrorism around the world the number of journalists killed, wounded, abducted, arrested, persecuted may increase in 2016.
