YEREVAN. - The Russian Embassy in Armenia has issued a statement in connection with the accusations of the arrested director of Analitik.am website addressed to the head of Russian diplomatic mission Ivan Volinkin on his alleged complicity in the happening. The statement reads:

“The Embassy was not going to respond and give any comments regarding the obvious delirium in the statement of Analitik.am website director A. Hovhannisyan.  However, in view of the fact that many media outlets – despite traditions of journalistic ethics and professionalism – easily took up the absurd concoction, the Embassy is forced to note the following:

First of all, speculating on the interstate relations to fence oneself off and shift the fault from oneself for an apparently criminal activity is a dirty play and blackmail. It’s well-known that the scope of A. Hovhannisyan’s “interests” was not limited to MP of the [Armenian] National Assembly (NA) T. Kh. Urikhanyan.

In this connection, case related to a Soviet time serial killer A.Chikatilo can be recalled. The latter was trying to justify the violent killings by political motives, specifically by alleged “struggle against the Soviet occupation.”

Secondly, following A.Hovhannisyan’s logic, the word “agent” used by her in connection with T. Kh. Urikhanyan, can be applied to all those MPs and politicians, which the Embassy maintains contacts with and whom it invites to receptions and other events organized by it. This is absolutely unacceptable in the ties between two brotherly countries.

Thirdly, the responsibility of the Russian embassy workers and, first of all the Ambassador, is to provide support to the comprehensive development of relations with the country of residence, in this case with Armenia. We do not deal with plotting, as A. Hovhannisyan wants to present.

The Embassy thereby considers this topic closed. We are sure that the law enforcement authorities of the Republic of Armenia will fully handle the present case and come up with a verdict in line wit the acting legislation.”

Hovhannisyan was arrested on charges of blackmail.
