Egypt is ready to start normalizing its ties with Turkey only after Ankara recognizes the legitimacy of removing Egypt’s ex-president Mohamed Morsi from power, reads the statement issued by Egypt’s MFA.

According to the text of the statement, the official MFA representative welcomed the efforts of Turkey towards improving the ties with Egypt.

“But it should be clear that it is necessary to recognize the legitimacy of the Egyptian people’s will, manifested on June 30 (Morsi’s resignation after massive protests) and the ensuing establishment of state authorities, which have taken lead of the country.  The recognition of this will become a starting point for the development of ties with Turkey and Egypt,” the MFA statement says, RIA Novosti reports.

Turkish PM Binali Yildirim stated on Monday about the country’s intention to normalize its ties with its neighboring countries in Mediterranean and Black Seas, including with Egypt.

The Turkish-Egyptian ties worsened after Morsi’s overthrow. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan then strongly condemned the actions of the Egyptian servicemen, stating that he considers Mohamed Morsi as the legitimate president of Egypt. In August 2013, Turkey and Egypt recalled their ambassadors.
