YEREVAN. – The businessmen, who export fruits and vegetables from the Republic of Armenia (RA) to the Russian Federation (RF), see great danger in the recent Russian-Turkish rapprochement, according to Haykakan Zhamanak newspaper.

“The problem is that the sanctions, which Russia imposes against Turkey, were useful for the RA.

“Especially, the Turkish-production vegetable imports to the RF were officially banned since the beginning of this year, [and] this enabled our producers to take a small section of the Russian market of vegetables.

“Before that, up to 300 thousand tons of tomatoes were imported from Turkey to Russia; this was half of the tomatoes being imported to the RF, and no country could compete with Turkish tomatoes.

“[But] the market opened after the sanctions, and the volumes of tomatoes being exported from Armenia increased by several dozen times in the first months of this year.

“[But] if Russia lifts sanctions [against Turkey], the Armenian tomatoes, in all likelihood, will again lose the Russian market,” wrote Haykakan Zhamanak.
