The Australian government intends to submit to the new federal parliament amendments to the laws on anti-terrorism, giving law enforcement agencies additional powers to prevent terrorist attacks, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced, TASS reported.

It will allow extending the imprisonment of people accused of terrorism, sentences of which have already come to an end, but which continue to pose an unacceptably high threat to the society.

The Prime Minister also said that the new legislation will empower the law enforcement agencies on suppression of terrorist activities by minors (14 years and older). Unfortunately, recently 14-year-old children have been convicted of participation in similar activities.

On July 2, 2016 parliamentary elections were held in Australia following the results of which the House of Representatives and the Senate of federal parliament will be formed. It is expected that the legislature will start its workon August 30.
