YEREVAN. – The incident, which occurred in Etchmiadzin (Vagharshapat) on the eve of the local government elections in Armenia, did not favor incumbent Mayor Karen Grigoryan.

Emin Yeritsyan, president of the Union of Communities of Armenia, noted about the aforesaid at a press conference on Saturday.

In his words, however, this incident is being linked to Grigoryan and his father, ruling party MP and Yerkrapah (Defender of the Land) Volunteer Union Chairman, General Manvel Grigoryan.

“Whereas this was not advantageous for the incumbent mayor, but for the other side,” noted Yeritsyan.

On the night of September 16, shots were fired on the vehicle of Mayor Karen Grigoryan. He was in the car with his brother.

There was information that the shots were fired by mayoral candidate Artur Tumanyan, and the nephew of former Mayor Hrachik Abgaryan.

Later, a fight had started between them, during which Tumanyan and Abgaryan were injured. They were hospitalized.

Hrachik Abgaryan, however, had denied that his nephew and mayoral candidate Artur Tumanyan had fired on Grigoryan’s vehicle.
