Uruguay's ex-president Jorge Batlle died a day before his 89th birthday at Sanatorio Americano clinic in Montevideo on Monday, Reuters reported.

Battle died following an operation to treat a blood clot after falling down earlier this month, the clinic said.

He underwent a surgery to stop a cerebral hemorrhage after he fainted and struck his head earlier this month during an event for his Colorado Party. But the former president never fully recovered and the Sanatorio Americano hospital where he was interned announced his death late Monday.
