Armenia and Russia have begun an extensive program of modernizing main battle tanks.

Press secretary of the Ministry of Defense of Armenia, Artsrun Hovhannisyan, told Izvestia newspaper of Russia that the work has already begun toward improving these tanks.

In his words, however, the number of such combat vehicles to be modernized and the deadlines for their modernization are not disclosed.

But informed sources of this newspaper said this program comprises several dozens of units.

“The [modernization] work will be conducted in Armenia, which will enable the Armenian side to make them less expensive,” said the Izvestia source. “That is, to modernize more [number of] tanks.”
