Cyprus President Dimitris Christofias participated in the liturgy of St Mother of God Church and left a written message to Armenians. Head of Cypriot Presidential Staff Christos Christofidis read out the message to the public.

Cyprus President criticized Turkey and stressed Cyprus will always take sides with Armenia, Greek Philelephteros newspaper reports. “In 1982 Cyprus became the first European country to recognize Armenian Genocide,” the message reads.

After the liturgy President of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian delivered a speech, calling on the international community to recognize Armenian Genocide.

According to him, Turkey should be punished for the crimes it has committed. Garoyian stressed Turkey’s aspirations to normalize relations with Armenia do not inspire trust and Ankara pursues its own goals.
