The United States must recognize the Armenian Genocide, Swedish MP, Chairman of the Armenia-Sweden inter-parliamentary friendship group Aneli Enokson (Christian Democratic Party) stated after visiting Armenian Genocide Memorial Tsitsernakaberd in Yerevan on Sunday.
According to her, the ruling wing of the Swedish parliament had to work hard for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide. “Sweden is a friendly country to Turkey, but we had courage to do it. Other states must follow Sweden’s example, Enokson told Armenian News - NEWS.am.
A representative of Swedish Liberal Party Frederick Malm said Turkey will not admit the Armenian Genocide in the near future. However, it will have to accept the reality in the long-term future, the MP said.
As Armenian News-NEWS.am reported earlier, the Armenian National Assembly awarded Aneli Enokson and Fredrick Malm with Medal of Honor for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by Riksdag of Sweden, as well as a significant contribution to strengthening and developing inter-parliamentary ties between Armenia and Sweden.
Since being elected U.S. President, Barack Obama has made his third address to the Armenian community in the United States in commemoration of the Armenian Genocide.
However, as during his previous addresses, the U.S. President used the term Meds Yeghern (Arm. Great Massacre), without qualifying the crime as genocide.
