YEREVAN. - The Armenian Red Cross Society held a fundraising campaign for Japan, collecting about U.S. $ 1600, the ARCS told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

Armenian customers transferred money directly to the following account 1150000234040400 of Armbusinessbank or by sending word “japan” to 1900 number. In addition volunteers conducted fundraising in Yerevan streets. The collected funds will be allocated to Japanese Red Cross through International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

Charity concerts and events with the participation of representatives of Armenian show business will also be organized to raise funds.

On March 11, the largest earthquake (9 magnitude) in the recent years hit the northeast of Japan, triggering a 10-meter tsunami and followed by several powerful aftershocks. A massive earthquake damaged cooling functions of the Fukushima nuclear plant, making the operator to pour seawater into reactors and let out radioactive air into atmosphere.
