YEREVAN. - Prime Minister of Armenia Tigran Sargsyan shared certain details about his family’s private life on his Facebook page, in response to media-circulated information that PM’s wife and children do not have Armenian citizenship.

“According to our legislation, a child, whose parents have Armenian citizenship, automatically acquires the citizenship,” said Sargsyan.

PM’s daughter was born in 1985 in Yerevan. The family then left for Spain, where Sargsyan’s wife taught Russian in one of the leading universities. They returned to Yerevan upon the completion of her employment contract and his daughter continues her education in an Armenian school. Sargsyan’s sons Abgar and Marcos were both born in Spain. Currently Abgar goes to school, while Marcos is in kindergarten.

The PM also told the story of acquaintance with his wife. The couple met in Leningrad (currently Petersburg, Russia), when both were university students. Sargsyan studied in Voznesenski Leningrad Institute of Economics and Finance, his wife - at State University. After seven years of studies, he defended his PhD thesis in 1987 and returned to Yerevan to join his wife (who has returned in 1985) and the rest of the family.

“Fate and certain circumstances lead us to different parts of the world, for education, employment or any other reasons, but I’m sure we all share the same desire: to see Armenia as the strongest pole uniting all Armenians,” said the PM.
