YEREVAN. – The rumors, which are long been circulating that a company belonging to Ruling Republican Party of Armenia MP and businessman Samvel Aleksanyan is producing whiskey, are being confirmed, reported 168 Zham daily.

“[Alcoholic] beverages bearing the expressive name of MacAlex, whose labels read whiskey, have begun to be sold in the Yerevan City supermarket chain [belonging to Aleksanyan].

“That is, Aleksanyan not only exports whiskey to Iraq, as it was said, but he decided to also provide Armenian consumers an opportunity to taste [this drink]. At the same time, at a fairly cheap price: 1 liter bottle for 2,300 drams [approx. US$ 4.84].

“Official statistics also fixed the birth of ‘Armenian whiskey.’ According to the NSS [i.e. the National Statistical Service] data, [a total of] 187,200 liters of whiskey was produced [in Armenia] in January-April this year,” wrote 168 Zham.
