YEREVAN. – Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan’s decision to become a member in the Customs Union continues to be the number-one subject of discussions by the political forces.

In this connection, Iravunk daily spoke with of the non-pro-government Prosperous Armenia Party National Assembly (PAP NA) Faction Secretary Naira Zohrabyan, who noted:

“We do not have comprehensive information as to what membership in the Customs Union will give, and we do not know why this process with the European Union had such a sad end.

“Ms. Zohrabyan, as chairwoman of the [NA Standing] Committee on European Integration, how do you assess the fairly harsh responses by the EU partners?

“I believe it is definitely equivalent because you are conducting daily talks with a partner for four years to join a completely different economic system, and a180-degree turn is made in four minutes.

“But is it not [true] that [PAP Chairman Gagik] Tsarukyan has already stated his position on all this?

“The PAP leader spoke about the relations with Russia as our strategic partner. Perhaps, the Customs Union is a much more favorable economic system for Armenia. But this is the case when you should not be guided by ‘perhaps,’” Iravunk quotes.
