YEREVAN. – Most residents of Armenia are extremely uneasy for several weeks already, Haykakan Zhamanak daily reported.

“The cause is the uncontrolled devaluation of the Russian ruble.

“Naturally, the situation in Russia would cause uneasiness to the hundreds of thousands of families in Armenia. It is no secret to anyone that about 80 percent of the population in Armenia regularly receives remittances from relatives and friends living abroad.

“And over 80 percent of the remittances received from abroad come from Russia, whose currency has depreciated by more than 30 percent since the beginning of this year. And this means that the income of our fellow countrymen, who regularly receive [money] transfers from Russia, has reduced almost as much,” Haykakan Zhamanak wrote.
